The theater was almost empty when we watch this film. Audrey and I took a Thursday off to watch the midnight showing at our local theater. I thought a lot of older people who actually remember the cartoon will attend, but surprising the demographic of the theater was young people in there 20’s. I personally never watch a Speed Racer episode but I do know the characters from watching shows like Family Guy and Robot Chicken referencing him. Maybe one of the biggest reason I really enjoyed this film because I had no prior knowledge of the story of this legendary racer. So going into this movie the only thing I was expecting was a lot of racing.
The narrative of this film was great. The first 10 minutes really pulls you in with a quick history lesson of most of the characters in the film. The Wachowski Brothers does a great job showing us the young Speed Racer and how his mind works as a Kid and influence around him. The film is full with vibrating neo colors that anybody would love especially kids. While you watch the film you have to just let your imagination go and let the Wachowski show you a living and breathing cartoon. The artistic level is one of the best I seen in years. It’s very original and surpasses films like Spy Kids series and Lava Girl and Shark girl movies that tried to become what Speed Racer is, a awesome kid and adult movie. The Wachowski Brothers retelling of an old story is so compelling that it shows why the Matrix and V for Vendetta were so popular. They know how to get the audience react to certain scenes that it plays out by you cheering for the hero through out the film and never stop believing in him even if the situation is not in his favor.
The races are one of the best I seen ever-in movies and will leave you breathless. This film has intense and wonderful hyper-realism races that will have you cheering for Speed and at times fill sorry for him when he loses. I have no idea if the Series has a true story line with the characters and there races but this film has a story that makes sense and makes you really involved with the characters and their struggle in life misfortune.
Emile Hirsch does a great job being our fearless Racer and rest of the characters will pull you into the story so well that you forget that you are watching John Goodman, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon, and Matthew Fox acting as our #1 racing family.
Overall the movie is awesome. This film is just pure eye candy visually and the story will have the whole family laughing and cheering for Speed till the ending credits. I can end my Impression with a lame attempt to say “Go” see the film, but I just want everyone to go out and take your family and enjoy this wondful film that will teach you that its not the end of the journey that is important but the journey we take to the end.
