It’s a cold November night here in Sacramento when Audrey, David, and I went to see the midnight showing of Twilight. I got our tickets 3 weeks advance because I really don’t know how popular a best selling book turn movie that cater to teenage high school girls would effect me in buying the tickets. At my surprise the first two screening of the movie was sold out and I had to get the third one. What I saw at midnight showing, there was about five screenings of the movie all of which started at different times. Of course there was hundreds of teenage girls attending our theater which was kind of annoying and exciting at the same time. Annoying because I know they will be screaming at the screen through out the film and Exciting because of that very reason. I love having the audience reacting to every moment and scene of the film. When the audience gets into a film then I know the movie experience will be good. I was happy that the audience was very excited and they showed it the whole night.
The story of Twilight can be best describe as a mixture of Romeo & Juliet and a film called Lost Boys. The story is basically about a girl name Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and a Vampire name Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) falling in Love in High School and the challenges they have to face as a Human and Vampire couple. Before watching the movie I also read the book. In doing so I can say that the film is in no way compare to the book. In my eyes the book will always be better then the film because it has the details that a film can never include. I will not compare anything with the film with the book because it wouldn’t be fair at all. So here’s what I think about the film.
The scenery of this film is so beautiful that it is breath taking at times. The film does a great job showcasing epic scenes of the mountains and the weather of the town of Folks. Some times I felt how cold and lonely this town was by the great scenery. At the heart of the film is a emotional roller coaster relationship with our star-cross lovers facing challenges after challenges in keeping their relationship in tack. The one thing that this film does well is showing us how it was when you first realize how much you love someone the first time. How it felt when you first made eye contact across the room, the first time you speak to that person, and the first time you actually got to touch that person you like so much.
This film at the beginning will cater to the High School teenage girl because of the story basics. The film is about premature love. Everyone has felt it one time in their life, either with an old crush or with their current love. There is no way to deny that you will relate to this film one way or another because if your human then you will know the human emotion both characters have on each other, even though one is a vampire. Near the end the film caters more to the “date” of the High School teenage girl because there are some really nice string-fighting action sequences that any guy will love.
Both Kristen and Robert do good job acting like teenage lovers. Their emotion and reaction to situations were handled well and believable at times. Some dialogue seems corny but that’s how the book was written. There was no way to change the dialogue of the film without ruining the source material. The film is cast with people you might never head of but it works. It’s a new franchise and it’s nice to see new faces on screen.
I never watch a Catherine Hardwicke film but I think she does a great job with the young actors in the film. The emotional part of the film is the hardest to do because they are all so new to a big film like Twilight. She does a fabulous job in directing the young actors in scenes that needed heavy emotion and does an Okay job in Action sequences.
The music of the film was okay and I like how they didn’t use Top 40 songs throughout the film but rather having an original score of its own.
The film is good but not great. They could of done so much better if maybe they had a bigger budget and more time. The overall movie experience was great because of the die-hard fans this Book has attracted. Just hearing all girls and women in the audience screaming when Edward is first shown was great. I judge my films on how much I like them by my own experience and then the audience. If the audience are having a good time watching the film so will I. All I can say is that this franchise have a bright future if they know how to handle the source material carefully. Take your significant other and watch this romantic vampire story.
