Today is the return of one of the best rappers/MCs that Hip Hop ever produced. He’s been gone for more than four years. His last album didn’t satisfied many of his fans. I for one didn’t think it was bad, but could of been better. He’s well known around the world for his violent mean-hearted and at times humorous lyrics but sadly he’s mostly well know for his color of skin. As he transcends from a music genre that seen it’s gimmicks and faults, be prevailed as being one of the most influential people when it comes to delivery and writing. He’s everybody’s favorite “white” rapper, Eminem. The album: Relapse.
First I want to warn people about the album. This isn’t for everyone, if anything, this might be hard to digest, even if you’re a fan. In Eminem’s past efforts, he’s always had this psychotic and disturbing tone in his records, but at times he grace it with a couple of songs above his normal content. He had songs such as “Guilty Conscious”, “Stan”, “Hailie’s Song” and even from his first LP self titled “Infinite”. This time around, he seem to be more angry, more violent, more…crazy?
You would think his musical content would have grown, especially many of us who became fans when we were in High School in 1999. It has been 10 years, I’m in college with a job, and most of us have kids of our own, so it seem like he’s straining away of being a growing artist. Is it the character he portrays that he need to uphold? I can say that in every other song he actually describe his plot to murder, joking or not, you do get tired of him rapping about it. On top of that, he has a prescription drug problem, again, in which he mentions in every song, hence the title of the album “Relapse”. Relapse is also his way of telling people that he’s back to form. He’s the same Slim Shady. He does make interesting songs, but then again, the context is very graphic. In the song “Insane” he raps about being sexually abuse by a step-father. Don’t know if that’s true?! but the way he raps in the song, it’s very demented.
That’s the theme through out the album, it’s too much in your face. It’s like you’re being force to watch people being raped, killed, and being embarrassed but instead you’re listening, not watching. Also, like past albums, he mocks the famous people, which I don’t mind, but most of the people he mocks are women. Which also gets tiring. There is a gleam of hope by the end of the album. He created an album once again to put out his personal demons, and he seems like he ran out of things to talk about, because you can only say so much about how much you hate what’s going, that the only way is up. Songs like “Deja Vu” and “Beautiful” seem to find some sort of redemption. As for the tidbits. I didn’t like his accent in most of the songs, at times it was either annoying or not listenable but his writing and flow is on point. The skits were great, especially if you like The Wire. As for the music itself, the beats by Dr. Dre, are good. So compared to his other albums, this is his most darkest and the most personal of the albums. This is a concept album, and the concept isn’t for everyone. You have been warned.
