E.S. Posthumus: Cartographer Impression

Cartographer

Not many people know of this group so I believe that an introduction is in order. E.S. Posthumus is a music group that produces cinematic style music. Their musical style is a mix of drum beats, with orchestral sounds, electronic sounds as well as beautiful chants. Their compositions are inspired by the Pythagorean philosophy that states "music is the harmonization of opposites, the conciliation of warring elements". E.S. Posthumus apply this philosophy beautifully in each of their songs. The group have so far released two full albums: Unearthed and most recently Cartographer (feat. Luna Sans) and two singles: Posthumus Zone and Unstoppable.

In their most recent album Cartographer, E.S. Posthumus has worked their magic once again. This album in my opinion is superior to its predecessor Unearthed, which I absolutely adore. Cartographer is a two disk album will surely to satisfy all E.S. Posthumus fans.

The First disc of the album features the captivating vocals of Luna Sans accompanying E.S. Posthumus unique blend of ethnic orchestral sounds. The lyrics written by Helmut and Franz Vonlichten, the founders of E.S. Posthumus, are in a completely made up language that the brothers created specifically for this album. The lyrics sound somewhat like Latin so if you are familiar with the language you could find some Latin words thrown in the mix. The Vonlichten brothers inspired by their passion for archeology not only created a language but they also created an island, Numa. The songs on this album narrate the rise and fall of the inhabitants of the island. And while listening to their first disc is hard not to be swept away by Luna's smooth, serene, almost angelic voice and the perfect instrumentation of E.S. Posthumus in the back ground. Luna's vocals add a somewhat romantic element to the album, and help guide listeners trough the island of Numa. Luna's vocals and E.S. Posthumus cinematic sounds are, in my opinion, a match made in heaven.

The second disc is a remix of every song in the fist disc plus two bonus tracks. The second disc is titled Piri Reis Remixes. Piri Reis goes back to E.S. Posthumus previous style that was featured in their first album Unearthed. Its sounds are the same cinematic tones that E.S. Posthumus is famous for, but with a little twist. The main difference between Cartographer's second disc and Unearthed is that Piri Reis features a stunning choir in almost every track. In my case I listened to the fist disc so many times that when I came to listen to the second disc I often found myself missing Luna Sans vocals. So the second disc wasn't as awing as the fist disc. But I have to admit that the opening song "Ashielf Pi" is truly epic.

In Cartographer, E.S. Posthumus have gone all out. Cartographer ends up being a quite different experience from Unearthed. Unearthed was a new listening experience and quite frankly I loved it, it was an album that movie score fans could quite easily sink their teeth into. Their sound is unique and you really have nothing to compare them to. Now Cartographer shows how much the group have grown. They reinvented themselves. The group takes their already well established cinematic sound and adds Luna Sans vocals, creating a whole new experience for their fans.

I for one feel in love the moment I listened to their first track and heard Luna Sans voice which was completely new considering that on their last album Unearthed had much more mature vocals. I found myself in love with almost, if not all, the tracks. My favorites on the first CD would have to be: Nolitus, Vorrina, Selisona, Marunae, Decifin, Sollente, Raptamei and Oraanu . Like I said before I found myself loving the entire album so eight tracks out of thirteen tracks on the first disc shows how much I loved it. My favorites in the second album would have to be: the epic opening song Ashielf Pi, Mosane Pi, Nasivern Pi, Caarano Pi, Sollente Pi and Vorrina Pi. This album is worth every penny I paid for. It is just stunning; it’s an album that could take you to a totally different world. I listen to it whenever I draw or paint and it just gives me a sense of serenity and quite frankly maybe that's why my drawings look better. You can listen to some music samples on the E.S. Posthumus site.
